Frequently asked questions. Feel free to contact us with any further queries.
The commonest vascular problems we treat in private practice are varicose veins and thread veins. We also deal with arterial problems such as aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease and carotid artery disease, and leg ulcers.
Mr Wijesinghe has been a consultant vascular surgeon since February 2002 and submits all index arterial cases to the National Vascular Registry which reports annually. He has trained vascular surgeons and junior doctors and continues as an examiner for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and for the Fellowship of the European Board of Vascular Surgery. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and served on the Council of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Since 2002, Mr Wijesinghe has run busy weekly clinics and operating sessions as well as been part of a full on call rota for emergency vascular surgery in Dorset and South Wiltshire. He has fulfilled all the requirements of the General Medical Council with respect to appraisal and revalidation.
You can make an appointment by contacting our secretary Christine Roper, or by being referred by your GP or specialist.
If you have a private insurance plan then any fees will be paid by that policy, though you would be wise to check exactly what the plan covers. If you are funding your own treatments, the fees will depend on the diagnostic tests such as scans that may be needed, and the specific treatment or combination of treatments you choose. Even if you have a complex condition or so many questions that your consultation runs overtime, your fee will not be increased. Your appointment letter will confirm the consultation fees.
Like many things in life you often get what you pay for. Some clinics can provide a cheap service because they do not have the full backup on-site of all the investigations and support services that are necessary for your safe and thorough treatment. Many clinics will not cover you if you are unfortunate enough to suffer a complication, unless you pay extra. Check the surgeon’s qualifications, GMC registration, and experience, and you may even do an internet search to find out more. In general, if a surgeon is recommended by your GP, specialist or a former patient, then it is likely that you too should have a good outcome.
